If you own anEssential Phone and were hoping to see a stable release of Android 8.0 Oreo rolling out in the next few days, we have good news and bad news for you. Let’s rip the band-aid straight off with the news that despite having produced 3beta builds, there won’t be a stable version ofAndroid 8.0 Oreo rolling out to your handset, ever. The good news? Well, the good news is that Essential is going to concentrate its efforts onAndroid 8.1 Oreo.

According to a statement posted on its Twitter account, Essential ran into some stability issues with its Oreo 8.0 development, issues that it hopes can be addressed in Oreo 8.1. Essential has said that a public release of the Oreo 8.1 firmware will be pushed back a few weeks but that it aims to release an Oreo 8.1 beta in the meantime to ( hopefully ) help iron out any bugs.

You’ve got to give credit where credit is due, Essential has done the right thing by announcing the delay, and stating its plans to rectify the problem. At the same time, there’s a certain level of irony that the ‘ Father of Android ‘, Andy Rubin, can’t get Android 8.0 Oreo to run stably on the Essential Phone. I’ve also seen some comments questioning the validity of the reasoning behind the delay because the Essential Phone launched running firmware that could easily be classed as ‘ unstable ‘. Anyhow, I digress.

Essential is aiming to get the Oreo 8.1 beta ready for late next week, so somewhere from February 6 onwards, we’ll keep an eye out for when the beta firmware becomes available. Hopefully, the issues that Essential met in Oreo 8.0 will have been ironed out, because I’m sure that no one wants the phone maker to experience more stability problems and have to announce that it is going to wait untilAndroid P launches to address those issues.
