End of an era — Microsoft discontinues Kinect Adapter for Xbox One

The Kinect went through a slow death over the last few years until Microsoft officially discontinued it this October, but its suffering was prolonged thanks to the adapter that Microsoft sold to connect it to newer Xbox One units, like the Xbox One S. As of today, that suffering has ended.

Microsoft has discontinued production on its Kinect adapter. This news was confirmed today by a Microsoft spokesperson to Polygon .

“After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to Polygon.

When asked if there was a chance it could be brought back in the future, the spokesperson declined to discuss the product roadmap ahead for Microsoft, but said the adapter “will no longer be available.”

Though the Kinect never really caught on to the larger playerbase, some fans were still upset when it was announced that the Xbox One S would not have a port for customers to hook it up to. This then lead the company to offer the adapter for free for eight months following its release. After that, anyone looking to purchase it would need to pay $39.99.

The Kinect Adapter has been out of stock for months at most retailers, including Microsoft’s own store, and now we know why. The company was indeed ending its production.
